Google is 2x faster 💨

Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) just got a huge update.

Google

What is SGE? Google announced the new experience in May. Large language models such as Multitask Unified Model (MUM) and Pathways Language Model 2 (PaLM2) power the service. SGE creates a “snapshot” of relevant information to answer complex multi-step questions.

Google recently released its first set of quality updates to SGE. The most notable improvement is in speed. Search results are generated noticeably faster and sometimes twice as fast. The update improves the quality of SGE answers, irrelevant and duplicate information is less likely to be developed.

This is the first major update to SGE, and it is likely we’ll see many more updates in the future. The initial experience and quality updates strengthen Google’s commitment to generative AI and to making SGE a valuable user experience.

Apple on generative AI 🚯

Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) touched on everything except generative AI.

MacRumors

Apple recently unveiled its new virtual reality headset, Apple Vision Pro, and a host of AI-powered features at WWDC. Apple Vision Pro was shown immersing users in apps, games, and movies. The headset boasted over 20 cameras, microphones, and sensors, an external battery, and a powerful dual-chip design.

What was missing at WWDC? Apple didn’t mention generative AI once. This comes as a shock to many, especially as Apple posted a series of generative AI job ads in recent weeks. Additionally, Apple’s main competitors including Microsoft and Google have pushed generative AI announcements steadily over the past months.

Many think the lack of generative AI talk is a strategic marketing choice by Apple. Matt Turck, a generative AI investor at FirstMark Capital said: “The reality is that Apple is a bit behind others like Microsoft and Google in generative AI, so it smartly chose to position itself as running its own race in AI, as opposed to trying to play catch-up with others.”

What do you think of Apple’s stance on generative AI?
