Artist comes clean about AI 🥷

AI is everywhere, even in art competitions.

Image: Boris Eldagsen

Last week, a German artist Boris Eldagsen, turned down the prize for the Sony World Photography Awards 2023. His “photograph” titled “Pseudomnesia": The Electrician” can be seen above. According to Eldagsen the black and white photo is “the first AI-generated image to win in a prestigious International Photography competition.”

“AI images and photography should not compete with each other in an award like this. They are different entities. AI is not photography. Therefore I will not accept the award.” Eldagsen said. “How many of you knew or suspected that it was AI generated? Something about this doesn’t feel right, does it?

As generative AI tools like Midjourney and DALL-E 2 continue to take over the internet, the nature of art is being questioned. “The creative category of the open competition welcomes various experimental approaches to image-making, from cyanotypes and rayographs to cutting-edge digital practices,” the World Photography Organisation said.

The AI field continues to evolve faster than we can keep up. 🥵

Elon Musk has been adamant about AI safety, especially regarding misinformation. In a recent Fox News interview, Musk continued to express his concerns about big AI firms creating disinformation and perpetuating bias. Musk also expressed concerns about an AI apocalypse, a scenario where AI could take over our lives.

Elon has also been hinting at starting his own AI company. Especially with the purchase of 10,000 GPUs, recruiting AI researchers, and the establishment of X.AI over the past weeks. We’re guessing the AI model will be maximum truth-seeking.

The truthfulness of the AI model will depend heavily on where the training data is gathered and the parameters the training data will be built around. The biggest problem we can think of is the use of human trainers. Human trainers are necessary for almost all LLM projects. Human trainers have biases passed down to AI models by nature.

What do you think the solution is? Is making a “maximum truth-seeking” AI worth it?

NVIDIA’s valuation 💸

GPUs are similar to shovels during the gold rush.

NVIDIA is no stranger to the GPU industry. The chip maker makes up 90%+ of the enterprise GPU market for AI. On January 1st NVIDIA was worth $146 @ $360B market cap. As of the start of April 24th, NVIDIA is worth $270 @ $662B market cap. 🤯

That’s a $300B increase in market cap since the year started. $302B/114 days = $2.7B a day increase. There’s more in the tank according to financial analysts. Frank Lee of banking giant HSBC was the last of 48 analysts covering NVIDIA with a negative rating on the stock, however, last Tuesday he doubled his price target from $175 to $355.

Where’s the competition? Since NVIDIA already owns so much infrastructure they’ve left peers such as Intel and AMD in the dust. Many companies including OpenAI use NVIDIAs A100 GPU for training AI models. Tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and Oracle also make use of NVIDIAs products, deploying H100 GPUs to power their generative AI landscapes.
